As a mother, Congresswoman Trahan believes Congress must answer Americans’ call for action on gun violence – not the gun lobby’s call to maintain the status quo. Bipartisan Safer Communities Act Following years of horrific gun violence and almost no federal action, Congresswoman Trahan voted to support the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which became law in June 2022. The legislation includes provisions for enhanced background checks for those under 21, disarming domestic abusers, and cracking down on gun trafficking, as well as funding for community violence intervention, mental health initiatives, and safety measures in schools. Banning Assault Weapons When shooters are armed with assault weapons, instances of gun violence are instantaneously made more dangerous and deadly. As an original cosponsor of the legislation in 2019, Congresswoman Trahan proudly voted for the Assault Weapons Ban Act in 2022 to prohibit the importation, sale, and manufacturing of assault weapons. Preventing Abusers from Access to Firearms Under current law, domestic abusers are too often allowed to maintain their gun ownership, posing a life threatening risk to their partners. Congresswoman Trahan was a proud cosponsor of the No Guns For Abusers Act of 2021, which aims to implement procedures to remove firearms from individuals who are charged with or convicted of domestic violence or subject to a domestic violence protective order. Bipartisan Background Checks Act On February 27, 2019 Congresswoman Trahan along with the majority of her colleagues in the House of Representatives voted to pass the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019. Under current law, only licensed gun dealers must conduct background checks of individuals seeking to purchase a firearm. Most unlicensed sellers are not required to perform routine background checks This bill would mandate background checks for all gun purchases, including those at gun shows, to protect the American people from this loophole. The passage of the bill marks the first time in nearly two decades the U.S. House of Representatives has voted on significant legislation to tackle the gun violence epidemic in our country. Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Congresswoman Lori Trahan is a proud member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, a group established in 2012, following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. This group, consisting of more than 170 Members of Congress, is devoted to finding common sense legislative solutions to our nation’s ongoing gun violence epidemic.
