Congresswoman Lori Trahan Statement on President Trump’s Emergency Declaration
Washington,
February 15, 2019
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA-03) released this statement following President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency. “I am strongly opposed to President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency, and will work with my colleagues from both parties to provide a check on what is a clear abuse of power. Under the Constitution, Article I states that it is the responsibility of Congress to fund the government. No president, the current one included, has the right to undermine that authority by declaring a fake national emergency just because they didn’t get their way. Let me be very clear: the Administration is seeking to divert billions of dollars from approved and ongoing military construction projects that are necessary to keep our nation safe and secure in order to spend it on an ineffective, wasteful wall. The President is heading down an unprecedented and reckless path. Now more than ever, Congress must lead on important issues like immigration reform, asylum, and border security,” said Rep. Trahan. ### |
