Trahan Leads 45 House Democrats Demanding Republicans Abandon Medicaid Cuts

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) led 45 House members in demanding that House Republicans reconsider their plans to slash Medicaid coverage for millions of Americans. The letter was sent in advance of the vote on the House Republican budget proposal that includes $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid.

“On January 28, 2025, the day following President Trump’s sweeping funding freeze order, chaos and uncertainty spread across the healthcare system as hospitals, community health centers, and additional providers were unable to access their payment portals,” the lawmakers wrote. “Despite widespread outrage over the abrupt and deliberate disruption to Medicaid – an overnight attempt to strip Americans of their healthcare – we are deeply alarmed that congressional Republicans are still pushing forward with plans to slash at least $880 billion from programs under the Energy and Commerce Committee’s jurisdiction, primarily Medicaid. These devastating cuts would bankroll tax breaks for corporations and billionaires, prioritizing the wealthy at the expense of millions of vulnerable Americans.”

House Republicans are planning a vote as soon as this evening on a budget proposal that directs the House Energy and Commerce Committee to slash funding for Medicaid and other programs by at least $880 billion to lay the groundwork for their tax proposal. An analysis of Republican proposals designed to reach that goal found that GOP cuts would lead to 15.9 million Americans losing health coverage through the Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program, including 230,000 Massachusetts residents. Those cuts would offset a tax proposal that will save the wealthiest 0.1% of Americans an average of $314,266 each year.

“Let us be clear: these planned Medicaid cuts will have devastating, far-reaching consequences for the essential services Americans depend on every day. They will accelerate community hospital consolidation and closures, eliminate innovative housing and nutrition support programs, and slash health coverage for children, expectant mothers, and postpartum women. The American people have made it clear that they want lower grocery prices and prescription drug costs, not harsh restrictions on their healthcare,” the lawmakers continued.
