U.S. Rep. Trahan wins reelection to leadership postBOSTON — Congresswoman Lori Trahan has won another term leading a key House committee, as Democrats position themselves to steer the minority caucus through complete Republican control of Washington next year. Trahan, a Westford Democrat, was reelected Tuesday to her post as co-chair of the House’s Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, which oversees the minority caucus’ strategic communications, among other responsibilities. "Together, we will work to rebuild trust with working families, defend our values, and position House Democrats to retake the House in 2026," Trahan said in a statement. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-NY, and House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., will remain the top two House Democrats after winning another term without any opposition. Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell was reelected chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee after defeating Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the vote. Trahan and co-chair Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost, a Florida Democrat, will serve alongside Dingell in the party’s fight to retake the House in 2026. Trahan threw her hat into the ring for the vacant position two weeks ago, following Democrats' historic loss in the Nov. 5 elections, writing to fellow colleagues that Democrats "have a lot to learn" after Donald Trump won the presidency and Republicans retained a majority in the House and wrested control of the Senate. "The threat to our constituents from a Republican trifecta led by President-elect Donald Trump is grave," she wrote, "and we must fast track that learning process so we can reposition ourselves to mitigate the damage and be victorious in 2026." The third-term lawmaker represents the sprawling 3rd Congressional District, which includes Haverhill, Andover, Lawrence and Methuen in Essex County, along with 22 communities in Middlesex County and another 11 in Worcester County. Trahan was first elected to Congress in 2018 to replace outgoing Rep. Niki Tsongas, after squeaking out a narrow primary win against nine other Democrats and beating Republican Rick Green and Independent Mike Moran in the general election. She cruised to another term in 2020 after not fielding challengers, and fended off a challenge from Republican Dean Tran in November 2022 to win another term. She won another two-year term in the Nov. 5 elections after facing no opposition. Trahan serves as a senior member of Clark’s whip team and is also a member of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee and on the Regional Leadership Council, which advises on major legislation.
