Trahan Statement on Steward Congressional Hearing

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03), a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Health Subcommittee, issued a statement following the conclusion of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing on Steward Health Care’s mismanagement:

“It’s shameful that while nurses from Nashoba Valley and St. Elizabeth’s had the courage to testify before a congressional committee about the dire conditions of Steward’s hospitals under his negligent management, Ralph de la Torre didn’t have the courage to show up.”

“Steward executives, under de la Torre’s leadership, knew that they were driving vital community hospitals into the ground, and they did it anyway so they could pocket as much money as possible. As we continue our work to restore critical services in regions like the Nashoba Valley that are reeling from Steward’s mismanagement, it’s imperative that Ralph de la Torre be held accountable for ignoring a subpoena and investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice and federal regulators for his actions.”

“I’m grateful to Senator Markey and Senator Warren for their work to organize this important hearing and for their continued commitment to the patients, providers, and communities impacted by Steward’s predatory private equity business model.”
