WASHINGTON - Yesterday, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03), Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Edward J. Markey (D-MA), and the entire Massachusetts delegation, announced that they’ve secured more than $17 million in funding for victim assistance and compensation from the Office of Justice Programs’ Office for Victims of Crime. This funding supports Massachusetts programs that provide direct financial assistance and services to victims of crimes, ranging from medical care to funeral expenses to criminal justice support and advocacy. Victim Compensation grants support Massachusetts programs in providing direct financial assistance to victims when crimes committed against them lead to out-of-pocket expenses, including medical and dental care, counseling, funeral and burial expenses, and lost wages and income. “I’m proud to see Massachusetts receive over $17 million in VOCA grants to support victims of crime. These resources are critical for families seeking justice and rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of tragedy. With this funding, we can continue providing essential services like counseling, financial assistance, and shelter, ensuring victims get the support they deserve,” said Congresswoman Trahan. “For survivors of crime, this funding can be life changing as people rebuild their lives,” said Senator Warren. “It’s powerfully important for the federal government to be a good partner to states to make sure victims get the support they urgently need.” “With more than $17 million coming to Massachusetts, this federal funding enables us to deepen our commitment to a fair and just system, ensuring that victims and their communities have the resources they need to heal and thrive,” said Senator Markey. “This funding will help ease the financial burdens of those affected, and ensure that they receive the essential support they deserve—whether through medical care, counseling, or advocacy. By addressing gaps in services and empowering victim service programs, we are taking a critical step towards a justice system that truly stands for equity and restoration.” “I am grateful that Massachusetts will be receiving more than $17 million in federal funding to support crime victims. Our state has always stood with those deserving of justice, and the Office of Justice Programs shares these values. This vital funding will undoubtedly play a critical role in state and local efforts to uplift victims and ensure they have access to much-needed support and compensation, benefiting communities throughout the Commonwealth,” said Congressman Neal. "America is a nation rooted in the principle of justice for all. Yet far too often, victims of crime fail to receive the advocacy, support, and resources they need to recover," said Democratic Whip Katherine Clark. "Thanks to this critical funding, our Commonwealth can address this grave injustice and ensure victims obtain the vital services necessary to help them rebuild their lives." “Every life impacted by violence matters, and we must invest in federal resources that support victims too often left to struggle on their own,” said Congresswoman Pressley. “Healing from trauma is a community effort and I welcome these critical investments to help people move forward.” ### |
