NECC celebrates more than 700 graduates

HAVERHILL — Northern Essex Community College celebrated more than 700 graduates at its 62nd commencement ceremony on Saturday. The event was held under a giant tent on the college’s Haverhill campus.

Student speaker Akira Matos, 19, of Haverhill told her classmates and guests, in both English and in Spanish, that she was never the most academically gifted student. Having graduated from Whittier Tech high school, she originally planned on going into a trade. But after attending NECC, she now plans to attend UMass Lowell to study biology with a premedical pathway.

“Going to college is a gamble, it’s expensive and everyone here today could probably tell you from experience just how much college books can run you,” said Matos, who hopes to become an ophthalmologist. She said that for some, NECC is only the beginning.

“We are not moving on from Northern Essex, we’re just moving forward because that is the only place to go,” Matos said. “So off we go, to the call of adventure.”

Elijah Antunes, student government association president, announced this year’s class gift is outdoor seating at the college’s El-Hefni building in Lawrence so that students can “study and hang out.”

The outstanding student award was presented to Kim Zappala, editor in chief of the NECC Observer, the college’s student-run newspaper.

NECC President Lane Glenn asked graduates and guests to hold up their cell phones, take many pictures throughout the day and to post them on social media.

“You are truly amazing,” Glenn told graduates. “I’m in awe of all you have accomplished so far, and all of us gathered under this tent today – your family and friends, your professors and advisors — and I can’t wait to see what you do for the world in the years ahead.”

Guest speaker Rep. Lori Trahan told graduates that commencement is not only a celebration of their academic achievements, but also a recognition of their resilience in the face of challenges big and small.

“As you write this next chapter – as you build on the progress made by those who came before you – may you continue to strive for greatness, pursue your passions, and make a positive impact on the world around you,” Trahan said.

“Those who follow in your footsteps are depending on you and I couldn’t be more optimistic.”

The ceremonies were live streamed by HC Media for those who could not attend in person and will be available for replay.
