Trahan Statement on Supreme Court’s Dismissal of Idaho Abortion Ban Case

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court dismissed a case regarding the legality of Idaho’s Republican abortion ban that prohibited abortion care for women experiencing emergency pregnancy complications:

“Republicans in Idaho passed an extreme abortion ban that strips women of their right to emergency abortion care. The result has been women experiencing severe pregnancy complications being denied care until their life is in immediate danger or airlifted out of the state. That delay in critical, stabilizing care has caused life-altering injuries that can have long-term health consequences for women, including the inability to get pregnant in the future.”

“Today’s Supreme Court decision provides immediate relief to women living in fear under Idaho’s draconian abortion ban. However, the Justices’ failure to rule in favor of women’s right to abortion when their health is in danger means that relief will last only until consideration of the next case where Republicans are trying to ban abortion without any exceptions.”

“We must pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to restore the full suite of reproductive rights that our mothers and grandmothers fought for. Only then will women in Massachusetts and across our country be safe from the GOP’s war on our freedom to make our own health care decisions.”
