Trahan Announces Leading IVF Doctor as State of the Union Guest

LOWELL, MA – Today, House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) Co-Chair Lori Trahan (MA-03) announced that Dr. Pietro Bortoletto will be joining her as her guest at the State of the Union. Dr. Pietro Bortoletto is a Reproductive Endocrinologist and the Director of Reproductive Surgery at Boston IVF, the practice where Congresswoman Trahan underwent IVF treatment for five years.

“In the wake of the GOP’s latest attack on our reproductive freedoms, I spoke up about how IVF gave my husband and me our two beautiful daughters, Grace and Caroline. The outpouring of love and support has reminded me just how salient this fight is to protect our reproductive freedoms. Of course, my story and my daughters were only possible because of Boston IVF, the practice that helped me through five long years of IVF treatment,” said Congresswoman Trahan. “I couldn’t be more honored to welcome Dr. Bortoletto, who works every day to help couples have the family they dream of, as my guest for President Biden’s State of the Union address. We look forward to hearing from the President about his commitment to working with Democrats in Congress to protect women’s access to reproductive care.”

“I am thankful to Rep. Trahan for the invitation to join her at the State of the Union to raise the importance of federal protection for IVF. Infertility affects 1 in every 8 couples in the US. Access to IVF treatment is essential medical treatment to help these couples build their families,” said Dr. Bortoletto. “Beyond infertility, access to IVF is crucial for patients with cancer who want to preserve future fertility and those attempting to side-step genetic disease in their offspring. Which state you live in should not determine your ability to access fertility treatment.”

Dr. Bortoletto was born in São Paulo, Brazil and raised in Miami, Florida by Brazilian & Italian parents. He attended the University of Miami for college and then moved to Chicago, Illinois, to attend the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Pietro Bortoletto is a Reproductive Endocrinologist and Director of Reproductive Surgery at Boston IVF. He specializes in all aspects of infertility care with a special interest in diminished ovarian reserve, recurrent pregnancy loss and implantation failure, Müllerian anomalies, fibroids, endometriosis, and Asherman’s syndrome.

Trahan gave birth to both of her daughters, Grace and Caroline, through IVF. She is a proud cosponsor of the Access to Family Building Act, which would codify the right to IVF nationwide. Since her first day in Congress, Trahan has also remained consistent in her advocacy for the Women’s Health Protection Act and has spoken out repeatedly about the need to protect abortion access. The first piece of legislation Trahan introduced this Congress was the INFO for Reproductive Care Act to support the creation of a coordinated national public awareness campaign to inform health care professionals on the best ways to help patients navigate the legal landscape following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
