Trahan Opposes Dangerously Inadequate GOP Foreign Aid Bill

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) Co-Chair Lori Trahan (MA-03) issued the following statemen after voting against House Republicans’ attempt to use defense aid for Israel as a political weapon to kill negotiations on funding for humanitarian assistance for innocent Palestinians, Ukraine’s defense, and efforts to counter Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific:

“The United States is facing serious threats to our national security. Iranian-backed proxies are attacking our troops, a grave humanitarian crisis in Gaza is growing worse by the day, Russia is gaining ground in Ukraine, and China is expanding its influence in the Indo-Pacific. Our allies and adversaries are looking to see how we’ll respond to these mounting crises, but once again, House Republicans have undermined our national security and weakened American leadership on the world stage.”

“The overwhelming majority of Congress – Democrats and Republicans alike – support getting Israel the assistance they need to defend themselves from the threat of Hamas and Hezbollah. However, delivering that aid while shunning our obligation to rally the world to support our allies and surge humanitarian assistance to innocent Palestinians in Gaza is extremely dangerous. This approach is not only morally unconscionable but also threatens to cede ground to authoritarian regimes already on the rise, with Iran using proxies to attack American servicemembers, Russia working to restore the Soviet Union starting in Ukraine, and China attempting to expand its control over Taiwan and other neighboring countries. Make no mistake – if our adversaries continue to see us waver, their next attack will be one that draws the United States into a conflict and threatens the lives of American servicemembers.”

“We have a responsibility to prevent that from happening, but the partisan legislation before the House today is wholly inadequate. I remain committed to negotiating a path forward that protects our national security, fulfills our obligations to our allies, and reaffirms our value of human life.”
