Trahan Statement on Meta’s Lawsuit Against the FTC

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03), a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee, issued the following statement after Meta unveiled a lawsuit challenging the Federal Trade Commission’s constitutionality and ability to protect children and younger users on the corporation’s platforms:

“Time after time, Meta has proven their commitment to pursuing profitability at all costs, including jeopardizing the safety, wellbeing, and privacy of children and younger users. Today’s lawsuit, unveiled on the heels of another scathing report about Meta’s failure to protect younger users on Instagram, is another act of desperation. It’s a ploy pulled from their tired playbook that promises safety improvements publicly but deploys dark money and shady tactics to maintain the status quo that has delivered multibillion dollar profits.”

“I commend the Federal Trade Commission, which under Chair Khan and Commissioners Slaughter and Bedoya, has breathed life into the agency’s mission to protect American consumers from harms like those posed on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and others. This lawsuit will not stop those efforts, and Congress must take action to bolster the FTC with a strong federal privacy standard, comprehensive transparency requirements for tech companies, and updated antitrust laws.”
