Massachusetts Set to Receive $130 Million in Federal Home Heating Assistance Funds

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03), a member of the Regional Leadership Council, applauded the awarding of $130,453,598 in federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds to help keep Massachusetts families warm this winter.

“As we head into the winter months, this federal home heating assistance funding will help ensure thousands of families across Massachusetts can afford to keep the heat on,” said Congresswoman Trahan. “I’m proud of the work our federal delegation has done to secure this investment and to increase funding for the LIHEAP program, including through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, so it can reach more households in need of help.”

Massachusetts was awarded a total of $130,453,598 in LIHEAP funding for this winter, including $126,677,861 in formula funding and an additional $3,775,737 from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Homeowners and renters in the Commonwealth are eligible for these home heating assistance funds if they earn 60 percent or less of the state median income, which is $45,392 for a single household and $87,294 for a family of four. A full breakdown of eligibility thresholds in Massachusetts can be accessed HERE. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has released a tool in English and Spanish for households to quickly determine their eligibility.

Last year, Massachusetts benefited from an additional $37 million above its basic formula allocation thanks to the federal delegation’s support of a $1 billion supplemental increase for the LIHEAP program. To build on that progress, multiple members of the House delegation joined a bipartisan effort co-led by Congressman James P. McGovern (MA-02) earlier this year to increase funding for the home heating assistance program so it can help more families in need.
