Trahan to Oppose Jim Jordan for Speaker

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) issued the following statement ahead of the 16th Speaker vote this year:

“Jim Jordan is dangerous. Rather than come to Washington to deliver for the folks he represents, he’s done nothing but fan the flames of division to get on TV and amass power on the far right. The result: over his sixteen years in Congress, Jim Jordan has failed to pass a single piece of legislation. But that hasn’t stopped him from introducing a bill to ban abortion care nationwide without exceptions, trying to slash Medicare and Social Security, and attempting to defund federal law enforcement. As if it couldn’t get any worse, Jordan also helped lead Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election, actions that led to the violent attack at the Capitol on January 6th. Someone with Jim Jordan’s track record used to rightfully be a pariah, but in today’s Republican party, his extreme views and legislative ineptitude are apparently the basic qualifications to be their candidate for Speaker of the House.”

“When we go to the floor this afternoon for the sixteenth Speaker election since Republicans took control of the chamber in January, I will vote for Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the only candidate who has offered a bipartisan path forward. Leader Jeffries and our Democratic Caucus have said repeatedly that we’re willing to work with sensible Republicans to strike a deal that sidelines the extremists who have hijacked our chamber so we can reopen the House and get back to work. That’s what the American people expect of Congress, and we’re ready to continue delivering for them.”

“Today, House Republicans will have to make a choice – work with Democrats to find bipartisan compromise or bend the knee to Jim Jordan and his gang of MAGA bullies.”
