Trahan Helps Reintroduce Legislation to Restore and Protect Abortion Rights

LOWELL, MA – Yesterday, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) joined 207 of her colleagues in the House in reintroducing the Women’s Health Protection Act, critical legislation that will restore and protect the right to abortion access across the country.

“Without the protections of Roe v. Wade in place, millions of women are now counting on us to advance the Women’s Health Protection Act to overturn dangerous Republican state abortion bans and codify abortion rights. In every state where abortion rights were on the ballot last year, Americans voted to protect lifesaving reproductive care. We know that the American people – and most importantly young women, like our daughters – want and need this legislation,” said Congresswoman Trahan. “That’s why I’m proud to be an original cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which will restore and protect women’s right to abortion access everywhere, ensuring that every person has the freedom to make the best health care choices for themselves, their families, and their lives.”

The Women’s Health Protection Act creates a federal statutory right for health care providers to provide abortion care and a corresponding right for their patients to receive that care – free from bans and restrictions that impede access.

The Women’s Health Protection Act is designed to work in tandem with the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Act. The EACH Act works to eliminate federal coverage restrictions on abortion care, including the Hyde Amendment’s ban on coverage for Medicaid enrollees. The Women’s Health Protection Act protects the right to accessible abortion care, while EACH ensures care is affordable.

Since her first day in Congress, Trahan has remained consistent in her advocacy for, the Women’s Health Protection Act and has spoken out repeatedly about the need to protect abortion access. The first piece of legislation she introduced this Congress was the INFO for Reproductive Care Act to support the creation of a coordinated national public awareness campaign to inform health care professionals on the best ways to help patients navigate the legal landscape following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The first floor speech she gave this Congress was also on protecting abortion access.
