Cambodia Caucus Chair Statement on Shuttering of Voice of Democracy

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03), Chair of the Congressional Cambodia Caucus, issued the following statement after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen revoked the media license of Voice of Democracy, an independent news organization and radio station:

“A free and independent press is essential to a strong democracy. I am alarmed that Voice of Democracy, one of the few remaining independent news outlets in Cambodia, has been forced to stop its reporting because Prime Minister Hun Sen chose to revoke its media license. This action, less than six months before Cambodia’s national elections, undermines the ability of journalists to hold power to account and threatens the right of the Cambodian to freely choose their elected leaders. The Congressional Cambodia Caucus joins the U.S. Department of State in urging the Cambodian government to restore Voice of Democracy’s media license and recommit to the promise of a free and fair press.”
