Trahan Statement on Biden’s State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) issued a statement following President Joe Biden’s State of the Union Address:

“President Biden’s address to the nation tonight detailed just how far we’ve come as a nation over the past two years and the work ahead of us to ensure working families are able to succeed.”

“Landmark laws like the American Rescue Plan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the CHIPS and Science Act have fueled the best post-pandemic recovery of any nation in the world with 12 million jobs created and unemployment at 3.4 percent, the lowest in 50 years. The Inflation Reduction Act is lowering prescription drug prices for millions of seniors and saving taxpayers billions while putting us on course to combat the climate crisis. And the passage of critical addiction and mental health bills like the MATE Act and the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Reauthorization Act have positioned us to finally tackle the root causes of the opioid epidemic and mental health crisis that millions of Americans, particularly young people, are facing.”

“As the President said tonight, much of the progress we’ve made has been bipartisan, and we must continue to work together across party lines to pass legislation that will build on the work we’ve done. However, we cannot and will not allow partisan demands from the most extreme members of the Republican Party to undo the work we’ve done. We will not put our economy at risk by playing partisan politics with the debt limit. We will not allow cuts to critical programs like Social Security and Medicare. And we will not allow the clock to be turned back even further on reproductive rights.”

“The American people delivered a narrowly divided government because they’re tired of the partisan bickering we’ve seen on full display over the past month. President Biden reiterated his commitment to bipartisanship. It’s my hope Congressional Republicans take this opportunity to meet us halfway.”
