Trahan Statement on LeLacheur Park Transfer

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) issued the following statement after the Lowell City Council’s vote to authorize the transfer of LeLacheur Park:

“When the 2019 season came to an end at LeLacheur Park, none of us expected to be in a three-year battle to ensure we see Red Sox prospects take the field here in Lowell once again. However, this community came together to make a strong, clear case for why Red Sox-affiliated baseball belongs in our city. Tonight’s vote by the Council gets us one critical step closer to the long overdue return of professional baseball to the City of Lowell.”

“I applaud the Councilmembers, Mayor Chau, and City Manager Golden for their tireless work on this transfer and for their partnership in the effort to return Red Sox-affiliated baseball to our city. UMass Lowell has a long track record of turning historic local venues into statewide and nationally recognized landmarks, including most recently the Tsongas Center. I fully expect that to continue with LeLacheur Park under the leadership of President Meehan and Chancellor Chen.”

“I look forward to continuing our work together and with the Red Sox organization to bring professional baseball home to our city once again.”

In 2019, Trahan led a bipartisan coalition of Congressmembers in calling on Major League Baseball to abandon its reorganization plans. Locally, she organized the Save the Spinners task force, which has since focused its attention on returning professional baseball to LeLacheur Park. Following the Red Sox minor league affiliate reorganization, Trahan helped form a partnership between the organization, the City of Lowell, and state and federal lawmakers focused on keeping baseball in Lowell. Earlier this year, Trahan successfully secured $750,000 in federal funding to support upgrades to LeLacheur Park that are necessary for the return of professional baseball.
