Trahan Statement on Committee Passage of Bipartisan Comprehensive Privacy Legislation

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03), a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee, issued the following statement after the Energy and Commerce Committee passed the bipartisan American Data Privacy and Protection Act, comprehensive privacy legislation:

“For years, members of Congress from both parties have discussed the need to rein in the abusive data practices and privacy violations of large technology platforms. They’ve talked at nauseam, grilled CEOs without end, and proposed bills that largely had no shot of becoming law. That pattern of inaction changed today.”

“The American Data Privacy and Protection Act will limit the amount of data that companies can collect on Americans. It will protect our children’s privacy whether they’re at home or at school. And it will give consumers the power to opt out of surveillance-based advertising. And that’s just the start. This bipartisan legislation is long overdue, and I’m grateful to the Committee leadership for their efforts to send it to the House floor. I look forward to voting to send it to the Senate and working with our partners to get it signed into law.”
