Trahan Statement on President Biden’s State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) issued the following statement shortly after President Joe Biden’s first State of the Union address:

“President Biden’s message tonight was focused on one thing: unity. He laid out a vision for how we can move forward as a unified nation – Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike – to address the challenges we face at home and the rising threat of authoritarianism abroad.”

“We’ve laid the groundwork over the past year to achieve that vision. In passing the American Rescue Plan, we’ve gotten more than 215 million Americans fully vaccinated, created 6.4 million jobs, and reopened our schools. The President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is sending unprecedented federal investments to the Commonwealth to rebuild our roads and bridges, clean up our drinking water, and create new, good-paying jobs. However, we remain clear-eyed about the hurdles facing working families here in Massachusetts, and tackling them head-on remains our focus more than ever.”

“We will answer the President’s call to pass legislation that continues our strong economic recovery, reduces out-of-pocket costs for families on essentials like prescriptions and child care, and revitalizes America’s manufacturing sector so products we rely on are once again Made in America. We’ll advance policies that address the dual mental health and addiction crises that have affected every family. We’ll end Congress’ inability to hold big technology platforms accountable and protect our children from the harms they face online. And we’ll make laws that finally uphold the promise we made to every veteran and servicemember who courageously volunteered to defend our nation by tackling veteran homelessness, expanding health services, and ensuring we have their backs the same way they’ve heroically had ours.”

“The work ahead to accomplish the goals laid out by the President will not be easy. To address the issues that keep families awake at night, to defeat cancer and end the opioid crisis, and to support our allies fighting for their freedom in Ukraine, Republicans and Democrats in both chambers must be willing to put country over politics and unity over self-interest.”

“The President gave us a blueprint tonight. It’s on us to build a better America.”
