Trahan Votes to Fund Heroic Capitol Police Officers and National Guard Members Who Defended the U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) cast her vote in favor of emergency legislation to provide supplemental funding for the U.S. Capitol Police and U.S. National Guard, which will be critical in preventing furloughs and personnel cuts following their heroic defense of the United States Capitol on January 6th and in the following weeks.

“On January 6th, one of our nation’s darkest days, the Capitol Police and National Guard members who assisted them risked their lives to protect everyone in the Capitol building. For that, we owe them a huge debt of gratitude,” said Congresswoman Lori Trahan. “We also owe them the support and tools necessary to ensure that nothing like that attack ever happens again. I’m proud to support this urgent, bipartisan legislation, which supports these heroes and honors their service and sacrifice. While this does not mark the end of our work to keep the seat of our Democracy safe, this essential bill serves as an important step in ensuring the security of our Capitol.”

The package, which was passed unanimously by the Senate and earned a strong bipartisan vote in the House, will deliver $2.1 billion in emergency funding to secure the United States Capitol, address the costs of the deadly domestic terrorist attack on January 6th, and more. Critically, this bill supports the members of the heroic Capitol Police force, who risked their lives to defend the Capitol and now require additional resources to continue their life-saving work.

In May, the House passed a strong security supplemental based on the facts and findings of a report by General Russel Honoré in the immediate aftermath of the insurrection, as well as the Inspector General's reports to the Committee on House Administration. The Senate’s bill did not include a number of recommendations from these reports that the House included in its original bill. As Congress continues its investigation into the insurrection, Congresswoman Trahan and House Democrats will continue to push for additional measures to secure the Capitol against future attacks.
