'Bold and ambitious': Massachusetts Democrats react to President Joe Biden's plansby Todd KazakiewichBOSTON — President Joe Biden’s plans for education and infrastructure received support from the state's all-Democrat lawmakers. Biden delivered his first address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday night, as he marks 100 days in office. The president unveiled a $1.8 trillion spending package dubbed "The American Families Plan," which includes universal pre-k for all 3 and 4 year olds, a federal paid family and medical leave program and free community college for all Americans. He also announced a tax increase on the wealthiest Americans to finance the programs. "We can invest in a future for all American families — including universal child care and universal pre-k — with a small wealth tax on fortunes above $50 million, a Real Corporate Profits Tax and a boost to IRS enforcement. I'm in that fight all the way,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren said in a tweet. “Also investing in our families, early childhood education, universal pre-k for 3 and 4 year olds, free community college, really investing in opportunities for young people, and I think that is something we can all get behind,” Rep. Lori Trahan said. “What he outlined for the American Jobs Plan and the American Families Plan is bold and ambitious,” Rep. Jake Auchincloss said. Rep. Jim McGovern praised the president's efforts to tackle hunger in America and called on the White house to convene a special conference on the issue. "Two million women have dropped out of the workforce during this pandemic, and too often because they couldn't get the care they needed for a child or an elderly parent. Because they couldn't get help. We need paid leave now," Rep. Seth Moulton said in a tweet. |
