Congresswoman Trahan Supports CASH Act to Deliver $2,000 Checks to Americans in Need

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) returned to Washington to cast her vote in favor of the Caring for Americans with Supplemental Help (CASH) Act of 2020, legislation that will deliver $2,000 economic impact payments to families and individuals in need of serious relief. Passage of the legislation comes just days after House Republicans blocked an attempt to pass the bill late last week.

“After nine months without additional relief, $600 is simply not enough for workers and their loved ones struggling to make ends meet,” said Congresswoman Trahan. “The Administration’s about-face and sudden agreement with us that $2,000 survival checks are long overdue is a welcome change. Now that the House has passed the bill, the President should turn his sights on Mitch McConnell and demand that he do his job. The Senate should vote immediately on the CASH Act so folks can start getting their payments as soon as possible.”

The CASH Act increases the value of economic impact payments from $600 to $2,000 for an individual and $4,000 for joint filers. It also closes the CARES Act loophole that unfairly prevented a mixed-status family from receiving a payment, even if one spouse would have been eligible as an independent filer.

The same provision was included in the relief package recently signed into law, meaning mixed-status families are eligible for the original $600 economic impact payment amount and would be eligible for the increase to $2,000 for each family member with social security number if the CASH Act becomes law.
