WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Assistant Speaker-elect Katherine Clark (MA-05)Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03), and members of the Democratic Women's Caucus (DWC) published a Women in the House playlist on Spotify to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and honor the tremendous contributions of women across the nation who are working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This has been a historic year for women: the celebration of 100 years of suffrage, our first woman Vice President, and the heroic role women have played as a majority of essential workers and health care providers during the pandemic. But our accomplishments are still coupled with crisis. Women across American are being pushed out of the workforce and pushed into economic turmoil because of persistent policies based on inequality,” said Congresswoman Katherine Clark. “This playlist is a celebration of women and our refusal to give up in our fight for equal rights and equal representation. I hope that when you listen you feel inspired, empowered, and ready to take on the world.”

“In a year that has been challenging for everyone, particularly working women and moms, it can be easy to overlook the tremendous achievements of strong, successful women across our nation. While I continue to advocate each day for policies that uplift women, I recognize that I wouldn’t be able to do what I do if it weren’t for the women who came before me, the women I serve with, and the women who sacrifice each day on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19 to make sure that we are safe and healthy, ” said Congresswoman Lori Trahan. “This playlist brought me some joy during this difficult time, and I hope it does the same for all of the strong women out there who need a reminder of just how fearless and inspiring they are.”

“Music has played an uplifting role in the battle for women’s rights since the suffrage movement– helping women to unify, rally, and assert their unbreakable spirit with songs of protest and praise to uplift and inspire us to keep going. This Women in the House playlist is in honor of our foremothers who struck critical blows for justice and equality, and for our mothers, sisters, daughters, and grandmothers who continue the fight today as frontline COVID workers, family breadwinners, political and economic powerhouses, and the rock on which we all build unshakable foundations. So, crank up the volume and let your heart and spirit soar with these fierce artists and their #SHEROSONGS of love, power, respect, and dignity,” said DWC Co-Chairs Lois Frankel (FL-22), Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), Jackie Speier (CA-14), Vice Chairs Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Deb Haaland (NM-01).

Background:

Despite the many challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, women continue to go above and beyond to get their families and their communities through this crisis. Women account for 1 in 3 essential jobs and over seventy percent of health care professionals. Their heroism is the latest in a long history of women who have stepped up when America needed them most. Despite the sacrifices made by American women for generations, the fight for equality for women in the workplace, in housing, in public spaces, and even in their doctor’s office continues. The on-going fight for equal pay, rights and representation is the cornerstone of the Democratic Women’s Caucus.

As the centennial celebration of the 19th Amendment comes to an end, the DWC organized this playlist curated by Democratic women in the House. Each song on the playlist was selected by a Congresswoman because of the inspiration it provides in the fight for a more equitable nation for women.

The lawmakers hope that this playlist will provide a motivational boost to the many heroines who continue to go above and beyond for their loved ones, their communities, and their nation.
