 LOWELL, MA - Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03), a member of the House Education and Labor Committee, announced $3,744,377 in federal Head Start funding for Community Teamwork Inc, a non-profit organization in Lowell. This grant was awarded by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families’ Office of Head Start.

“The social and emotional well-being of our children is of the utmost importance, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Congresswoman Trahan. “The emergency programming that Community Teamwork has put into place during this crisis has been fundamental in providing families with the resources they need. This funding will go a long way in ensuring the success and longevity of these programs.”

Background:

Congresswoman Lori Trahan has used her position as a member of the House Education and Labor Committee to advocate for increased funding for Head Start. In negotiations over Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 appropriations, Trahan successfully requested increased funding for Head Start. The program received $11.6 billion in funding for the year, an increase of $1.5 billion over the total allocated for FY2019. Trahan continues to advocate for additional funding for this important program, having supported a similar request for increased Head Start funding in FY2021 appropriations negotiations.

Community Teamwork Inc. is an organization committed to reducing poverty in the city of Lowell through the creation of housing, education, and economic opportunities. Their focus is on not only helping families maintain economic stability but growing their financial opportunities as well. In 2019, Community Teamwork enabled 1,285 children to access pre-school activities to develop school-readiness skills. They also helped almost 3,000 families maintain their housing.
