Congresswoman Lori Trahan Recognizes Fitchburg Resident and Market Basket Manager in Her Local Heroes Spotlight

LOWELL, MA - Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) recognized Spyleos Regopoulos, a Fitchburg resident and store manager of the Water Street Market Basket, in her Local Heroes Spotlight initiative for his unwavering commitment to keeping his employees and customers safe while ensuring that the public has access to the groceries they need during this crisis.

“Our grocery store workers are our unsung heroes - working day and night to keep their stores clean, shelves stocked, and customers safe. In his role as a store manager at Market Basket both in Fitchburg and in Athol, Spyleos has shown tremendous leadership during a truly difficult time. He leads by example and has always put his employees and his community first. I’m proud to spotlight Spyleos - a hero we are all thankful for,” said Congresswoman Trahan.

Spyleos, who was nominated by his wife Lisa, is a Fitchburg resident and has been a Market Basket employee for more than forty years. When the coronavirus pandemic started, he was the store manager at the Market Basket in Athol, where he worked around the clock making sure that customers and employees had what they needed. Despite the stress and uncertainty from customers, anxiety from employees who feared getting sick, and ever-evolving sanitization and protective protocols, he never wavered under the pressure.

Spyleos has been praised for his leadership during this crisis. He began wearing a homemade mask weeks before it was mandated, and his employees followed suit. His compassion for his employees and customers has also been described as unparalleled. He has since been named the store manager of the Market Basket on Water Street in Fitchburg. When Spyleos is not working at Market Basket, Lisa describes him as a wonderful father who volunteers much of his free time as a basketball coach.

Trahan will continue to spotlight heroes who, like Spyleos, have gone above and beyond to serve their community during this difficult time. Those interested in nominating a hero in their lives can do so by clicking here. Trahan will announce additional Heroes Spotlight awardees each week.
