Congresswoman Lori Trahan Statement on DeVos Rule Dismantling Title IX Protections

LOWELL, MA – Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) issued a statement following Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’s decision to roll back protections for survivors of sexual assault and weaken sexual assault accountability standards for institutions:

“Even as we continue to grapple with this unprecedented global pandemic, Secretary DeVos has continued to push her anti-student, anti-survivor agenda with no regard for the human cost. Her decision does a tremendous disservice to victims of sexual assault and harassment on college campuses.”

“Instead of providing students with the resources and reassurance they need to get through their most difficult time, this decision to roll back protections and accountability standards makes campuses less safe and erects new barriers for survivors seeking the justice they’re entitled to.”

“As Secretary DeVos continues to neglect and endanger the very students she’s sworn to protect, the House and Senate should immediately advance the College Affordability Act, which was passed out of the House Education and Labor Committee last October and would block the implementation of this regressive policy.”
