Trahan Statement on Passage of War Powers Resolution
Washington,
January 9, 2020
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA-03), a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, released this statement following her vote in support of the War Powers Resolution. “For too long, Congress has allowed presidents to bring us to the brink of war without congressional approval. The trend of Congress ceding war powers to the President didn’t start with Donald Trump, but his handling of the current crisis is the clearest example we’ve seen of why we in the 116th Congress must take back this Constitutional responsibility. “In pursuit of this objective, since coming to Congress last year, I’ve voted to terminate the 2002 AUMF, and voted against any funding for conflict with Iran absent the adoption a new AUMF or a formal declaration of war. My vote today in support of the War Powers Resolution is reflective of my belief that the American people must always have a say in matters of war and peace through their elected representatives.” ### |
