Congresswoman Lori Trahan Statement on Passage of Legislation to Restore the SALT Deduction to Provide Relief to Massachusetts Families

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, Representative Lori Trahan (D-MA-03) voted in favor of H.R. 5377, the Restoring Tax Fairness for States and Localities Act. This bill would eliminate the marriage penalty this year and eliminate the SALT deduction cap for 2020 and 2021. The SALT deduction cap disproportionality impacts Massachusetts families. Additionally, the bill increases from $250 to $500 the tax deduction that teachers may take for out-of-pocket classroom expenses.

“President Trump’s 2017 tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires included this unfair tax hike on states like Massachusetts which invest heavily in our public resources. The SALT deduction cap erodes incentives for home ownership and charitable contributions and punishes state and local governments that pursue progressive policies. The impact of this tax hike has been placed squarely on districts where voters have chosen to fund better schools, health care, transit, parks, and social services with their hard-earned tax dollars. Undoing this harmful cap is another promise kept, and I am proud to have supported this legislation,” said Congresswoman Trahan.

Earlier this month, Congresswoman Trahan joined with Representative Tom Malinowski (D-NJ) and 80 of their colleagues urging House Leadership to bring this legislation to the floor. You can find the full text of the letter  HERE.
