“I want to be challenged in all aspects of my life, and I know that West Point is the best place to do so. I’ve always wanted to serve as an officer, and this is the best route to that goal,” said Martinez.

He thanked JROTC instructor Sergeant First Class Jose Carballo for being a positive influence in his life.

“He has always been the one to guide me,” said Martinez. “He always had faith in me.”

Martinez will graduate from Lawrence High School on May 31, 2019 and report to West Point for the first time on July 1, 2019.

Congresswoman Lori Trahan, who succeeded Congresswoman Tsongas, said she was proud to learn of Martinez’ appointment.

“I congratulate Alexis on his hard-work and commitment to making his dream come true. His outstanding achievement serves as a great honor to him, his family, and to the entire Lawrence Public School community,” Rep. Trahan said. “Nominating students to our prestigious service academies is one of my great honors as a Congresswoman. I thank Congresswoman Tsongas for her work on Alexis’ behalf and look forward to following his exciting service ahead.”
